Furyk Goes Deep In Match Play, Grace Plays New Big Bertha Alpha

Jeff Newton

Jim Furyk won three matches at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on his way to a T5 finish with a Big Bertha Driver (9°) and an SR 3 Golf Ball in the bag. Callaway Tour Reps made a few updates to Furyk’s driver leading up to the event, lowering the loft in particular.

His gamer is cut to 44 3/8”, with 1” total tipping and set to the Neutral directional bias. The slide weight is set to the 1/Fade setting (just slightly toward the toe side). Jim’s game looks sharp as the Tour now moves over to the east coast, starting with the Honda Classic later this week.

Grace Plays New Big Bertha Alpha

Callaway Staff Pro Branden Grace worked on a new Big Bertha Alpha Driver (9° head) last week, and put it into play for the Match Play event. After moving the Gravity Core to the down position, Branden picked up more ball speed and substantial carry distance.

“What we did change was the (Gravity Core) position,” said Callaway Tour Rep, Mike Sposa. “It was in an up position which increases spin and lowers the launch. So we flipped it to the down position and really, really dialed in the numbers.

“We kept it at the COG position Draw (directional bias) -1 (loft adjustability). And at the end of the day, he ended up picking up 3 ½ to 4 mph ball speed over (his old driver) with the Big Bertha Alpha. And that translates into 6 to 8 carry yards.

“The best part of it all was that the dispersion was really tight. He plays a fade primarily and…he didn’t hit one (drive) left that I saw in a day and a half and was just really stoked about it.”

Grace’s driver is 45 ½” long, with 1” tipping, an 8 gram weight in the toe, 6 gram weight in the heel and a Speeder 661 X Shaft.
